2017’s Best Tactical Knife: Reviews and Top Brands

In this article, I’m going to go over what the best tactical knife is these days. First it’s important to realize that tactical knives are not the same as regular knives. There is simply no comparison between the two for multiple reasons.

One reason is that the construction of tactical knives is much, much better. They are usually made of stainless steel and built to withstand tough conditions both indoors and outdoors.

They can also be used for more situations than your average pocket knife. Some are great for self defense while others are good for serving as a utility tool.

With so many different options on the market it can  be confusing to find the product that is right for your needs. Luckily I’m here to help. Below I’m going to go over my top 4 picks when it comes to quality tactical knives.

Best Tactical Knives – Top 4

1. Cold Steel Recon 1 with G-10 Handle

The highly rated Cold Steel Recon 1 is a knife that offers a high market value. The size of knife makes it very practical and easy to store.

It has a 4 inch stainless steel blade that is 3.5mm thick. The total length of the blade is 9-3/8 inches and it has a tanto point. This increases the strength and durability of the tip.

This knife can be used for a variety of things although given the blade is four inches there are probably better options for everyday carry.

2. Kershaw 1870OLBLK Knockout

If speed is your thing then the Kershaw 1870OLBLK may be the knife for you. It was designed for speed with SpeedSafe technology which enables you to quickly snap the 3.25 inch blade out in under a second. When it’s not in use the blade is folded in, making it very compact and easy to carry around.

The KA-BAR #1213 has a high quality carbon steel blade that is 7 inches in length. It has a total length of 11.75 inches and comes with a kydex sheath for carrying it around.

The knife performs great in a variety of situations, although some report that it’s a bit uncomfortable to cut wood with because the guard can dig into the fingers.

Tactical Knife Buying Guide

Everyone has their own opinion on comfort but in general the simpler knives without fancy designs are more comfortable.

When you decide to buy a tactical knife you should buy one that feels great to hold, luckily any of the one’s that I’ve reviewed on this site fit that bill. I don’t really like the fancier knives that use a lot of branding and marketing rather than making quality products.

Purpose of Use

What will you use your tactical knife for? It’s true that a good tactical knife will be good for a variety of situations but you should strive to get one that’s specialized for what you’ll use it for.

For example if you’ll mainly be using it when hunting then you might want a different model than if you just wanted something for everyday carry.

Blade Design

The most common blade types are: drop point, tanto point, clip point, spear point. It’s important to consider if you will need to cut through some tough material, as a serrated part of the blade might be the best option there.

Blade Type

The two main blade types are folding and fixed. Fixed blades are exactly like the name implies and stay fixed in one position permanently. Folding blades fold obviously and are easier to carry around and keep in your pocket.

They both have their benefits. Personally I say get both!

The handle on a tactical knife should be as strong as possible and made of a good material. Composite handles are good and grooved patterns can really help with grip.

It’s important to understand your state or countries laws regarding knives and carrying them. It’s a good  idea to search for some answers regarding this.
